So, if you are a Shadow user, you may know that as of today, Shadow announced some pretty sweet upgrades coming in Febuary of 2020. Currently, they will only be released in the European Market, with the US Market following, hopefully, shortly after. This is my personal take on the new pricing tiers and what they will mean for Shadow and its future!
Tier 1 - Shadow Boost
This is the first new tier Shadow announced. Shadow Boost. It will, essentially, be a replacement for what we currently have today, but, with a stronger CPU! Going off what we currently know, we will be getting...
A CPU with 3.4GHz and 4 Cores
A GPU that is equivalent to a Nvidia GTX 1080
12GB of Memory
256GB of Storage
For the CPU, I am guessing they will be using a Xeon Gold 5217 Processor. This is an 8 core Intel Server Processor with a base clock of 3.0 GHz and a Turbo Boost clock at 3.4 GHz. This would allow Shadow to split this Processor up between two people, allowing for them to make more off of each processor.
The GPU will most likely stay the Nvidia Quadro P5000 that we currently have, as this is an Nvidia GTX 1080 equivalent. This is perfectly fine for this tier, as the Nvidia Quadro P5000 is more then capable of running games at or near max quality at 1080p resolution with 60+ frames per second gameplay. Some games may struggle, but most should be fine!
Memory and Storage appear to be the same. 12GB is a decent amount of memory for most games. The 256GB of storage will be a struggle for some people, however. But as long as you do some decent storage maintenance, you shouldn't have too many problems! Check out my Tips & Tricks for Storage.
My thoughts on this? Pretty sweet actually. Especially because the pricing they announced is €14.99, which is pretty much half of what we are paying now! USD prices have not been announced currently, but I am trying to confirm. This will be a total game changer in the Cloud Gaming market, and to those looking into making a switch. For that price, it will be hard pressed to argue that Building a Gaming PC is better then Cloud Gaming when it comes to pricing!
This will make Shadow more affordable for a lot of people, and should significantly help Shadow grow. And the Hardware isn't half bad, as currently, Shadow works perfectly fine for the games I play (Final Fantasy XIV and some Racing Sims). This tier is focused on Full HD 1080p resolution gaming, but I am sure you can play at higher resolutions like you currently can.
Tier 2 - Shadow Ultra
This is the next tier they announced. Shadow Ultra. This tier... is absolutely amazing! Let me ask you, What is one of the biggest things out in Gaming right now? If you guessed RTX, then you are correct! And guess what? This tier is RTX capable! Here are the technical specifications that were announced...
A CPU with 4 GHz and 4 Cores
A GPU that is equivalent to a Nvidia RTX 2080
16GB of Memory
512GB of Storage
For the CPU, I am guessing they will be using an Intel Xeon Gold 6234 Processor. This is an 8 core processor with a base clock of 3.3 GHz, and a turbo clock of 4.0 GHz. This will also allow for Shadow to split this processor up between multiple people.
The GPU will most likely be an Nvidia Quadro RTX 6000. This is my guess for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 equivalent, as their PassMark scores are similar. This is a pretty beefy GPU, scoring a few thousand points above a Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080. A decent upgrade to any gaming rig, and a decent upgrade for your Shadow!
Memory and Storage both get a nice little boost. Memory jumps from 12GB to 16GB, which will help out for a lot of games, especially ones like Star Citizen. The storage gets doubled to 512GB! A really nice boost for those that want to play large games that they had issues on before! A much needed increase, in my opinion.
My thoughts on this? Heck yeah! Prices for this tier are €29.99. The same price that the current Shadow subscription is in Europe. A significant boost to your gaming, at no additional cost? More please! This tier will allow for 4K gaming with little to no issue at all, and a pretty beefy computer to do other things on. This tier would be perfect for independent game designer or professionals looking to use professional hardware, without having to cough up the up front premium pricing.
Shadow is really hitting the mark with this tier. Almost every game should have no issue running using this tier. You may not always hit 60 frames per second on a 4k resolution monitor on some games, but, you should be pretty darn close! This tier can be compared with top of the line gaming computers that you can currently purchase. A huge step up for Shadow, and a huge win for the Cloud Gaming world!
Tier 3 - Shadow Infinite
Last, and certainly not least. The mother of all Shadow tiers. Shadow Infinite. This tier is an ABSOLUTE POWERHOUSE! Want to run any game without issue? This tier will be your choice. Want a computer to render some 3D models or use for other professional software? This will handle it without issue! The revealed specifications are as followed...
A CPU with 4.0 GHz and 6 cores!!!
A GPU that is equivalent to a TITAN RTX!!!
32 GB of Memory!!!
1TB of Storage!!!
First and foremost... wow! This tier is packing some serious power! I think this tier will be running the same Intel Xeon Gold 6234 processor that I put for the Shadow Ultra tier. A beefy CPU that should have no problem with modern games!
Now... the GPU on the other hand will most likely be an all powerful Nvidia Quadro RTX 8000! This beast is the Titan RTX equivalent (in my opinion), and should have absolutely NO issues running your favorite games in 4k! The fact that Shadow is offering a tier of this power is just amazing, and I look forward to what they will offer in the future!
Pricing for this tier will be €49.99. Double the price of the previous tier, but you are getting a seriously strong computer. In my opinion, unless you need the power for game designing, modeling, or other professional work, you may not really need this tier. But if you want to game without ever having to worry about low frames, then this tier is for you!
These new tiers are just down right amazing. Shadow is smart and utilizing some current hardware, while upgrading the current bottleneck. The CPU. Being able to extend the life of the current Nvidia Quadro P5000's will allow for Shadow to save some cost, and make more from what they currently have. The new GPU's that will be available will seriously up Shadow's game in the Cloud Gaming market. In my opinion, a great decision on Shadow's side, and I can't wait until these tiers will be announced in the US!
