Rocket League is becoming free-to-play and will be leaving Steam

Rocket League is getting a rather significant update to the game later this Summer. Today, developer Psyonix announced that the game will be going free-to-play. On top of that announcement, Psyonix also stated that Rocket League would be delisted from Steam and move to the Epic Games Store.

Rocket League will release on the Epic Games Store on PC the same time it goes free to play. This version of the game will be identical to the version found on other platforms, and will feature cross-platform play anywhere you play Rocket League, including between the Epic Games Store and Steam.

The game will also add support for cross-platform progression and inventories if you link an Epic account. Those who have already played Rocket League online or do so before the game goes free-to-play will get a bunch of in-game goodies.

Once Rocket League goes free to play, anyone who already owns Rocket League on any platform (including Steam) will be able to play and enjoy the game with full support for future updates and features. However, the Steam version will no longer be available to download for new players. To put it simply, wherever you play now (including Steam), you'll still be able to play in the future.

Those who own the game on Steam currently will be able to continue playing the game with full support and all future updates, however, new players will not be able to download the game on Steam anymore.

This news is not that surprising as many multiplayer games go free-to-play as it could end up being more lucrative for them in the end. The developers were also acquired by Epic Games, so the move to the Epic Games Store is not as surprising.

Will you be getting into Rocket League when it goes free-to-play? I know I will be giving it a try!
